In Canada PR

Owing to the rising inflation rates, the Canadian government has decided to increase the immigration fees for the new application in 2022. The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) confirmed this on 30th April 2022 and stated that this increase in the PR application fees is the first time in close to two years.

Let us look at the new rates to give you clarity about the changes.

The new rates aren’t much different for those looking for a single PR. These are the ones who do not have any dependents like children, spouses, parents, or common-law partners.

So if you are one of these, the new rates should not be a cause of concern.

However, if you are applying for a PR with dependents, you might want to take a close look and understand the new prices before submitting the application and the fees.

The table below compares the price increase for each program:

Program  Applicant Current Fee (in CAD) New Fee (in CAD)
Right of Permanent Residence Fee In addition to any accompanying spouses or common-law partners, the principal applicant may be required.  500 515
The Federal High Skilled Program, the Provincial Nominee Program, the Quebec Skilled Workers Program, the Atlantic Immigration Class, and most Economic Pilots.  Principal applicant  825 850

The key takeaways from the table:

  • No change in costs for permanent resident travel documents, alternative immigration paperwork, and permanent resident ship cards.
  • The candidates with freshly granted PR need to submit a minimal fee to get the privilege of permanent residency. This fee must be submitted either along with the application or once the authorities sanction the application.
  • If a candidate pays the fee at the time of application and their application is later denied, the fee will be refunded.

The right of permanent residency fee has changed from 500 CAD to 515 CAD, with effect from the 30th of April, 2022. This fee is in addition to the prices that have been indicated above. When you submit your application or when it is accepted, you will be required to pay this cost.

Only immigrants whose applications are approved are required to pay this fee. If an immigrant’s application is not approved, they will get a refund of the cost. After all this, an immigrant must pay a charge known as the “Right of Permanent Residence Fee” to activate their status as permanent residents.

Who is exempted from paying the fee for the right to live permanently in the country?

  • Children who rely on the applicant or sponsor for financial support,
  • Applications sponsored on behalf of orphaned brothers and sisters, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, etc.
  • Applicants who are qualified based on humanitarian and compassionate grounds, as well as convention refugees who fall within the purview of the ‘Protected Person’ program, and
  • Applications for sponsorship of children who have been adopted.

Effects of fee increment on government revenue

Even after the price increase takes effect, Canada’s fees will still be relatively low compared to other nations such as the United States of America, Australia, New Zealand, and England.

Costs associated with service delivery include program processing and administration, internal services, and the services provided by delivery partners.

The government of Canada ensures that the majority of these expenses are funded by individuals who use these services rather than by taxpayers to support a method that is more efficient in funding government programs.

If you are fully informed of the status of your application fee and any other part of your application, you will have an easier time getting through the application process.
