Along with these features, Canada also proffers a beautiful opportunity to reunify with your family through the Parents or Grandparents program and avail Parents Visa Canada.
What is PGP?
PGP is a program enabled by the government of Canada to reunite with your family through the Parents and Grandparents program. Every year, the Government of Canada will welcome 10,000 applicants on a first-come-first-serve basis.
If a Canadian citizen or permanent resident wishes to move on to Canada with their parents or grandparents permanently to Canada, they can through parental or grandparent sponsorship. It is one of the programs through which IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada) allows family reunification.
How Long Does It Take to Sponsor Parents to Canada
Sponsoring parents to Canada through the Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) begins with several important steps including the submission of interest, an invitation to apply, and the processing of the complete application. From May 21, 2024, Canada is set to issue invitations for up to 20,500 potential sponsors.
According to the latest IRCC data, the average processing time for PGP applications is typically 20 months. However, due to additional provincial requirements, the process can extend to approximately 33 months for applicants planning to reside in Quebec. The duration largely depends on the case’s complexity and the existing backlog within IRCC’s system.
How to Check if You Are Invited for Parents Sponsorship
If you submitted an Expression of Interest in 2020 and are still in the pool for the Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP), you need to stay vigilant starting May 21, 2024. IRCC will send out invitations randomly over a two-week period to potential sponsors. Additionally, on May 31, 2024, IRCC will update the status of invitees on their official website.
To check if you have been invited to apply, you can use the confirmation number received when you submitted your interest to the sponsor form. This number allows you to verify your status online and see if you are among those invited.
If you are not invited, consider other options for family reunification such as the Super Visa, which allows grandparents and parents to –
- Live in Canada for up to five years
- Apply for extensions of up to two additional years without leaving Canada.

Application Procedure
This application for the parents and grandparents program is a combination of both the online and physical documentation process. After the submission of EOI (Expression of Interest) the invitations to sponsor the application of parents or grandparents will be sent to the potential sponsor. Once they receive the invitation they have to submit the completed applications with all supporting documents. The supporting documents have to be submitted within 60 days with a processing fee of 1040 CAD.
Then the Canadian children or grandchildren looking to sponsor their parents or grandparents need to fill out the form issued by the IRCC, stating that they wish to sponsor their parents or grandparents. The sponsorship application is processed by the Case Processing Centre (CPC) in Mississauga, Ontario, or the CPC in Vegreville-Alberta (for family members living) in Canada. If the sponsorship application is approved it is sent to the appropriate Canadian visa office. This program is entirely different from the Parents and Grandparents Program in Quebec.
If a Canadian citizen or permanent resident is invited to apply to sponsor their parents or grandparents, there are two applications:
- The application to become a sponsor.
- Their parents or grandparents must apply for permanent residence.
Then, they have to send both the sponsorship and the permanent residence application together at the same time to IRCC.
Application Process

The potential sponsor should support their parents or grandparents financially for 20 years. The period begins from the date they become a permanent resident. In case, if the sponsored person has received any social assistance from the government, then; they have to repay the amount to the government.

This is essential to support themselves and to sponsor their parents through parents sponsorship Canada. When Will Parent Sponsorship Open for 2024
The intake for the 2024 Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) is currently based on the interest to sponsor forms submitted back in 2020. IRCC will not be opening a new intake for expressions of interest in 2024. For those not already in the pool or not selected in this intake, the Super Visa is recommended as an alternative.
This strategy allows IRCC to manage the existing backlog effectively while still offering families the opportunity to reunite with their parents and grandparents under the current immigration provisions.
- Debt
- Welfare Assistance
- Federal, provincial, and municipal financial assistance for employment training or social/ welfare benefits.
- Compensation board payments, excluding those for permanent disabilities.
The MNI is determined by the statistics of Canada’s low-income cut-off (LICO). It is the income threshold below which a household is expected to allocate a greater expenditure towards the necessities for an average household.
