The Comprehensive Ranking System or the CRS is a point-based system used to rank your profile in the Express Entry Pool. It is used to assess a range of attributes such as your skills,  language, ability,  education, work experience,  and other factors

It is important to understand how this system works so that you can learn how to increase your rank by improving your CRS score. Landing a job in Canada can increase your CRS points significantly and also help you acquire an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian immigration. Let us see how you can score CRS points from a job offer.

What Kind of Jobs Do You Need to Do to Gain CRS Points for Express Entry?

The kind of job you do also matters when trying to gain CRS points. You have to do jobs that are valid or have the option where you can claim CRS points for that job. There are a few points stated by the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) that must be considered for the job to be considered valid under the Express Entry Program. The job must be:

  • A full-time employment
  • You should have worked there for at least a year
  • The job offer must belong to one of these skill levels: 0, A, or B
  • It should be backed by Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)

While you are trying to score points for a company offers under the Canada Express Entry  Program, you will need to submit a job offer letter copy. You must also provide information outlining your job role and responsibilities, your salary details, and employment conditions. You must also include your LMIA details or LMIA exception.

What Is a Labor Market Impact Assessment?

An LMIA (Labor Market Impact Assessment) refers to a document received by a Canadian business that intends to employ a foreign national for filling a vacant job in their company. It can only be obtained through a Canadian employer. It helps in evaluating if a foreign national will have a negative or positive impact on the labor market of Canada. If one has to apply for an LMIA, the employers must include their business details and their position details, and must also provide proof that they have hired a Canadian citizen for the position.

The ESDC (Employment and Social Development Canada) helps in reviewing all the LMIAs submitted to them and helps determine if a foreign national has had a positive or a negative impact on the labor market. If the LMIA is positive, it implies that the individual will have a favorable effect on the labor force of Canada. You need to ensure that the job offer you have landed has a positive LMIA so that the job offer can be counted towards your CRS score and Express Entry profile.

Even the LMIA has certain rules and exemptions. There are a few job offers where certain Canadian employers can get an exemption from LMIA. These are the exemptions:

  1. International trade agreements (like NAFTA)
  2. They can be exempted if they have few agreements between the provincial governments and the Canadian federal government.
  3. There can also be exemptions citing Intra company transfer or “Canadian interests”.

For more details about the LMIA exemptions, you can consult the IRCC’s guidelines. These guidelines can help show the jobs that can be exempt from the need for an LMIA.

Now, let us see how many points one can score if one gets a job offer for Express Entry.

The CRS score or points awarded will be based on the specific position’s NOC code. These NOC codes are provided based on the skill level for that job position. You can get either 50 points or 200 points based on your job position’s skill level. Higher management positions get the highest total of 200 points. These 200 points are awarded to job offers with NOC codes that start with 00. All other jobs get a total of 50 points which are of skill level A, B, or 0.
