Canada has uncovered an ambitious Research Talent Initiative, a new program to attract and strengthen the scientific, academic, and technological leadership of the country. Visa this Initiative, the Federal Government will launch 3 new recruitment streams. It is particularly created to attract all leading international and skilled researchers who can deliver health, economic, and societal benefits to Canada.
Along with these three streams, the Canadian Government has also launched the Canada Impact+ Research infrastructure fund. This is to help the institutions cover all related expenses for the intake of new researchers. The expenses include the advanced lab equipment and relevant tools, and other research infrastructure costs. The 3 New streams include:
- Canada Impact + Research Chairs Program
- Canada Impact + Emerging Leaders Program
- Canada Impact + Research Training Awards
Through these 3 pathways, the Federal government of Canada aims to welcome more than thousands of researchers. Also invest up to USD 1.7 billion CAD over the next 10 years to support researchers, work, and settlement in the country. These 3 new streams will mainly focus on researchers in the priority fields given below.
- Biotechnology health
- Quantum Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Cybersecurity
- Environment, Climate resilience, the Arctic
- Community resilience and Democratic
- Manufacturing and advanced materials
- Advanced digital technologies (AI, quantum, cybersecurity)
- Food and water security
- Defence and dual-use technologies
Canada Impact + Research Chairs Program
The Canada Impact + Research Chairs Program is a one-time initiative, created to recruit over 100 leading worldwide researchers. This program has distributed more than USD 1 billion CAD in funding for more than 12 years. March 10, 2026, is the registration deadline for this program.
- The researchers are selected by the Canadian institutions. There are no direct individual applications.
- The Awards range from USD 4&ndash- 8 million CAD or more for more than 8-12 years.
- The funds under this program can be used for research programs, salaries, and settlement support.
- Institutions must ensure to provide integration support and immigration assistance.
- To apply under this program, a nominee must be working and residing outside Canada at the time of nomination.
- Must qualify as full or associate professors.
- Nominee must begin a full-time faculty position in Canada within 12 months of accepting the award.
Canada Impact + Emerging Leaders Program
This program aims to strengthen early-career researcher (ECR) recruitment. To hire the international ECRs into tenure-track roles, the institutions will get USD 100,000 per year for six years.
- The nominee must be an early-career researcher with an independent research program.
- Need to be appointed as a full or associate professor and
- should take up a full-time faculty position in Canada within 12 months of accepting the award.
Canada Impact + Research Training Awards
This program intends to invest USD 133.6 million CAD to bring 600 PhD students and 400 postdoctoral researchers to Canada. The substantial funds for Doctoral students are USD 40,000 for 3 years and USD 70,000/year for 2 years for postdoctoral students. All the awards must be activated by March 31, 2027.

- Should study currently or work abroad
- Also, meet the admission criteria for PhD or postdoctoral roles.
